I am sorry to be the bearer of this very sad news, It is a particularly grievous loss coming so shortly after the passing of Yuri Manin, who was Bill's almost exact contemporary. 

Both of them did immense honour to the human mind and spirit by their work.

A very sad news: Bill died today. I talked to Fatima yesterday and I knew the situation was bad, but we hoped he could survive the crisis. It was not so.
